"Welcome to the rifle range. You will first assume the kneeling position here at the firing line. You will notice an increased measure of control firing from the kneeling position with a rifle (+10 to your rifle roll) kneeling is also effective when you utilize a pistol. Two magazines have been provided each with ten rounds. When I say ready you will load the first magazine into your weapon and begin observing the range. A series of 15 targets will appear. Ten of them are enemy combatants and 5 are civilians. Shoot each enemy target once and do not shoot the non-combatants. When ready take your position.
Spoiler:
@ThreeBFour The range can be done individually and since your character is ready we can begin. A round allows for only a single action to occur. So this range will be a series of 30 rounds. Round one and every odd round will consist of an observation check. The roll on your check will determine whether you see the target and correctly identify the nature of the target or not. Your even rounds will be firing a rifle. Your character should be good at this since it was one of your background skills.
Please roll your first observation check and I will tell you what your character sees.
your observation check is 2d10 +10 taken from your skill sheet. Also after every skill roll you make please roll a D100. Even though this is "training" you do not get the training bonus. If you read about that part in the rules I have posted. The reasoning for that is that these initial training missions are already included as part of the permanent allocation of xD10s that a character rolls.
An unrecognizable figure appears at 250 meters, A shadowy figure in some sort of uniform at 100 and a German pilot at 50.
Spoiler:
Difficulty at 250 meters is 60 Difficulty at 100 is 30 and difficulty at 50 is 20 to hit. You can go ahead and take all three shots and their skill increase rolls if you decide to.
Your net observation roll was a 23 you got a -10 because you rolled a 1 on one of your d10s up above. 1 have additional negative effect 0 have additional positive effects.
At least you didn't roll a 1 on your skill improvement roll. the rule about the 1 and 0s have minor effects. There is another about 1 and 100 on the skill level roll. A 100 add 1d10 to your skill improvement (the actual improvement not the roll) a 1 subtracts a 1d10 from your skill level. You could have wound up with a small skill than what you started the range with. Lol. Hopefully, the dice roller decides to like you soon.
Seeing the 3 targets pop up Benito forgoes the 250 meter shot as he cannot tell what it is. The second target in a uniform at 100 meters seems like fair game to him and the German pilot at 50 meters is a definite shot.
so you rifle skill went up in post #5 88/10 = 8. So we add another eight to your rifle roll.
So 100 meter shot 61 /18 = 3.38 so another increase of 3 bring you to 21
50 meter shot 48/ 21 = 2.xx so another increase of 2 to bring you to 23
You did all the math right you just missed the increase from post number 5.
Also, you rolled two 0 (10s) on D10s during your rolls. This game has a rule called the rule of 1 and 0s. When you roll a 1 something negative happens when you roll a 0 something positive happens. One option is to get a plus 5 on your skill increase roll. another is to take a +10 on any skill roll (to use the skill)
In this case, why done we give you a + 10 to your next skill increase roll.
The two targets fall to the ground and are followed shortly by the Major calling out. "What do you have against the Richspost! Seriously we have all been mad at the mail service on occasion, but they are non-combatants! Resume Fire!
Shortly after the major gives the signal an Italian officer appears at the 100 meter mark.
"Youse obviously never met thems mailmen from Brooklyn. Thems fair game Major." Benito says trying to blow of his mistake, wishing he had seen the target properly.
A bit of a smart-arse arn't you. That can get someone killed in the field. Perhaps you just arn't ready for this work? Lets see though how well your memory is.
There are a lot of distractions in combat, but you must always be on the alert. the major holds up a clip board. At what range was the wermacht(german) soldier?
"You not the first person to tell mes that Major, mi mother always saying that." He says as he tries to remember where he'd seen the soldier. "Although honestly I can't remembers where that kraut popped his head up at. They's always paid mees to remember what color dem wires was. I ain't never had to do da shootin'."
At what range was the German Pilot? (Difficulty 30) What is the approximate age of the pilot you saw? (Difficulty 40)
Spoiler:
You probably won't get some of these or any of them. They are opportunities to learn though and increase the skill. Seems fitting for training. Just make up an age if you succeed the check.
Benito dropped his cocky and smart talking attitude, realizing that he needed to work on a skill he thought he was normally good at, but had just failed twice at. "Sir I have no idea what range he was at, I guess I was paying attention more to the target popping up more than what range they were at, or whether it was uniformed or not."
That is the best description I have heard yet. It seems like you need some additional practice with observing your targets as well as shooting. Our next round of shooting will be from the prone position. Firing from the prone position provides additional stability when firing rifle and sub machine guns. The range officer calls out for six targets to be raised. One at the 50 meter, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 marks before laying down next to lil benny looking towards the shooter ready to provide advice.
Spoiler:
The range master will provide aid on your checks. You will add his 2d10 to your observation rolls and his 3d10 to your rifle rolls.
Observation will now be 4d10+ skill level
Rifle will now be 6d10+skill level.
You may perform the checks and narrate as you feel appropriate. This is to help you improve your scores and introduce the aid mechanic.
Feeling a little unsure of himself from his previous failures minutes ago, Benito listens intently to the instructor as he explains what is happening on the field ahead.
I keep forgetting to add in the bonus for Prone, not that it matters with this particular roll. Also the SOE Roller doesn't have a Roll Button and Enter is not doing anything.
Benito makes the rest of the shots only missing the last one at 300 yards, although he did notice a problem identifying targets at range, maybe he needed glasses? In the end he brushes off and thanks the major for the lessons of the day.
