Rifle Range Gavin Addair (Shado)

"Welcome to the rifle range. You will first assume the kneeling position here at the firing line. You will notice an increased measure of control firing from the kneeling position with a rifle (+10 to your rifle roll) kneeling is also effective when you utilize a pistol . Two magazines have been provided each with ten rounds. When I say ready you will load the first magazine into your weapon and begin observing the range. A series of 15 targets will appear. Ten of them are enemy combatants and 5 are civilians. Shoot each enemy target once and do not shoot the non-combatants. When ready take your position.

@ShadoWarrior the range can be done individually and since your character is ready we can begin. A round allows for only a single action to occur. So this range will be a series of 30 rounds. Round one and every odd round will consist of an observation check. The roll on your check will determine weather you see the target and correctly identify the nature of the target or not. Your even rounds will be firing a rifle. Your character should be good at this since it was one of your background skills.

Please roll your first observation check and I will tell you what your character sees.
your observation check is 2d10 +10 taken from your skill sheet. Also after every skill roll you make please roll a D100. Even though this is "training" you do not get the training bonus. If you read about that part in the rules I have posted. The reasoning for that is that these initial training missions are already included as part of the permanent allocation of xD10s that a character rolls.

tl/dr roll observation and then a d100 please.

PS - the D&D dice roller sucks compared with the FFG one you made. Lacks a lot of the functionality of the other one, such as remembering the contents of boxes you previously filled.

PPS - It'd be sorta nice if you started the RP, such as introducing the instructor so that I could interact with him, at least in a minor way such as my saying "Yes, Sar!" when given an order.

A target pops up 100 meters out and on the left hand side of the range. You are unable to make out specific details but can tell it is wearing black clothing.

Difficulty 30 if you decide to shoot. Automatic hit at your skill level. Though you should still roll both the shoot and your D100 to see if your skill increases

Your observation skill increases by 78/10=7.8 which rounds down to 7 (always round down).

If you choose to shoot, roll rifle skill. We won't worry about damage right now as the Target just drops.

Then roll observation again please for next target.


Sorry about jumping right in. I'll give a chance to interact between magazines.

At 100m (a football field's length, roughly) you can easily tell if someone is armed with a rifle. You can even tell if they are holding a pistol if you look carefully enough. "black clothing" isn't enough to inform my character as to whether the target is a potential enemy or not.

It's not a person it is a target. The prime difficulty would be the amount of time you have to look at it.
The difficulty was 30, which you feel sorry of meeting, so you were not given full details. This makes it a judgement call. Do you shoot at an unknown when you know there are enemies around or do you hold fire.

Knowing that I failed the roll helps, some. And I need a max roll (20) to pass, so this test is almost impossible for me. But will my next Observation check be +17 instead of +10 due to skill increase?

This system makes no provision for aiming? Taking some time to carefully aim before pulling the trigger?

I'll think about adding in something for aiming but rounds are intentionally shorter.

Yes your observation skill had increased so you use the new score +17

Skill progression should be rapid at the low levels and taper off over time.

Ok so determining skill increase is percentile roll/ skill level rounded down. So 28/40 is no skill increase on your rifle skill.

Your observation should go up nicely though one you calculate it.

On you rifle roll another rule comes into play. The rule of 1 and 0s. Basically 1s are threats on a d10 and 0 are advantages. Since you rolled a net of 2 1s your weapon jams. Please roll a weapon maintence roll difficulty 20.

Please narrate hitting the Target and the weapon jam. You see three more targets pop up. A child at 50 meters a German soldier at 100 and an SS officer in black uniform at 150. You have the rounds before they drop down. Just enough to clear the jam and take 2 shots.

Gavin mutters a Gaelic curse as his rifle jams. This bloody piece wasn't rightly oiled is what. At least I hit the bugger. He calmly clears the jammed round, works the bolt to slide in a new one and fires at the SS officer. He easily takes down the Nazi target, works the bolt again, and fires on the grey-painted Wehrmacht target. That one, too, goes down, not that there was any doubt in his mind that he'd nail it.

Four figures appear at 250 meters. The figure to the far right is separated from the others by a distance of approximately 5 meters and appears to have the silhouette of a dress. The figure farthest to the right has the silhouette of a rifle pointed to the left in the direction of the other three figures. The middle two figures are immediately adjacent to the one with the rifle.

Depends on the difficulty of my next Observation check. +10 on an impossible check would be silly.

Gavin elects to hold fire. He's not trigger-happy and won't shoot unless he has enough reason to think a target is an enemy. The other 3 aren't sufficiently clear for him to put any of them into the "needs to be shot" category.

Instead he takes that time to feed another 5-round charger (clip) into his rifle's magazine.

You only get the luxury of being wrong once. If you are going to shoot make sure you get all of the targets. With the group of four don't shoot any if you are not sure on so targets. Shooting just reveals your presence and makes you a target.
