Pierre Essomba Atangana fled his home village of Mbe’e in Gabon to escape corvée labor on a French cocoa plantation. He chased rumors of paid labor westward until he reached the port city of Libreville. There he found freedom but also insecurity, with endless days of backbreaking work loading and unloading goods from ships and carrying goods to inland transports. Libreville’s cinemas offered Essomba a brief escape; he began to envision himself as a film character—a detective, a spy, a soldier—and he adopted the nickname “Humphrey Bogart” among his friends. On weekends, he told stories, boxed, and played glass bottles at parties fueled by local moonshine.
For “Bogart,” the Vichy French takeover of Libreville provided an opportunity, as the newcomers needed local dockworkers and porters for military goods. Meanwhile, a young priest took an interest in Essomba and offered him meals in exchange for information about goods and troops coming into and out of the port. When Free French forces retook Gabon in November 1940, the priest revealed himself to be a British agent. He said that the Allies could use a charismatic African man with a penchant for “acting,” so he offered Bogart a chance to undertake such work in Europe.
With training done, Essomba has taken on a new "legend" identity as Blaise Mvila Owono. Much of this legend identity matches his true background: his age, nationality, and place of origin. However, "Blaise" came to France two years ago under sponsorship from Father Célestin Le Roy of the Congrégation du Saint-Esprit. Since, Blaise has been training in clerical work and nursing, with short residencies at several French hospitals and clinics. The ultimate goal is for him to return to Gabon after the war, where he will join the staff of a hospital that the Catholic Church has promised to build.
