Ambrus Gikas

Nationality: Greek

Citizenship: US

Age: 28

Military Service: US Army

Gender Male

Languages: English, Greek

Background
The second oldest of three children, Ambrus was born to Greek immigrants in 1913. His farther fought and died in the Great War leaving Ambrus, his mother and two sisters to fend for themselves. As soon as he was able to, Ambrus found work in one of the factories so that he could help provide for his family. Even though the family now lived in America his mother felt that it was important not to forget where they came from and insisted that the children learned Greek.

When the Great Depression hit young Ambrus found himself without a job and struggled to find steady employment. Upon turning 18 he enlisted in the Army as an engineer so that he could send steady paychecks to his mother and sisters back home. As an engineer he volunteered for demolition training and additionally volunteered when he heard about the establishment of airborne school. His main drive for going to this elite school was for the additional pay it would provide.

Copy pasted so the stats still need to be adjusted and I will be filling in the background and other info. Just submitted it now so I wouldn’t need to keep repeating the work if I have issues with the site. Highly doubt it will happen but I’m being cautious.

Sounds good. I'll get your rifle range thread up. So we can begin to play at your convenience.

@Swrider can you look at the background skills for me. For some reason I feel I’m missing the mark there as well as where I should distribute the points for the modifiers.

Awesome thank you. Other than that does the background work? And is anything else missing, besides of course where home is? I’m thinking East coast area, somewhere with plenty of factories. Still need to do some research on major factory hubs of the era.

It looks good. Just the home town. That vague description is enough. As your actual background won't come up a lot in the game. Characters will try to stick to their cover stories once they have them.

@kanila I think you need to adjust your 3rd skill down Demolitions. It is broken up into multiple skills.

It is indeed. It is also bout getting feedback on the system. I was worried it would be too complicated, but everyone appears to have caught on to the dice mechanics, which is awesome.

The mechanics for the dice are fairly easy to understand, although the 1s and 0s may give me issues for a little while until I learn to pay more attention to them, but I think if I think of them as Crit Hits and Fails it may work better for myself at least.

Still not to bad. It looks like your skills are going up. Slowly perhaps, but a few good rolls could change that quickly.

Yes they are. Observation in particular has had steady increases. I have to say I do like how the skills you use increase when they are used.

I always felt level based progression to be a bit clunky. It is ok for tabletop but PBP really emphasizes how slow it can be. Even FFGs system of directly using experience points feels sluggish. I also thought it ridiculous that you could never use a skill and suddenly get great at using it. The trade off is that the game requires more skills to keep players from maxing everything out too quickly. Though from actual use it seems like progression slows dramatically after you reach skill level 40. I imagine that trying to get above eighty or ninety will require a lot of use of a particular skill. Observation, in particular, will be used a lot. Just like vigilience/ perception/ search etc.. are in other games. I may eventually break it into two or more skills, but I don't want to completly overload the game. There is a fine line between enough and too many.

In most skills-based RPGs you get XP which you then spend to improve skills. There are very few games where you directly improve skills through use. The only such games that come to mind are Bethesda's Elder Scrolls computer games. Skill improvement in this game is one of the things I like most about the system. I especially like the fact that the better your skill gets the harder (slower) it is to improve. Harder, but not impossible, just slow.

Speaking of breaking skills up, I'd like to comment that Morse code should not be two separate skills (one for sending and a different one for receiving). Anyone who can "read" Morse can send it, and in fact reading it requires more work than sending does. To send you just have to know the code and tap it out. To receive you not only have to know the code, but you have to exercise good listening. You also need to fix the MANY misspellings on the skills page.

I would be inclined to agree but had my mind changed. On Netflix, there is a television show called Churchill's secret army, where they recreate the SOE training school. It is part of what provided the inspiration for this game. During that, they teach several individuals how to send and receive morse code. It was interesting that there was a wide variety of skill and that some of the people who could transmit well could not recieve well, and vice versa. They talked about how that was a common problem with SOE agents who only received a short period of training. Operators with much more experience could do both easily, but it was definitely a learned skill.

@kanila this briefing is all role play. Since the character legend and specializations don't need to be completed to take part, I am going to move that forward to give you additional time to work on the legend and choosing your specializations.

Sounds good. No hurry, as I mentioned this next section is role play and information. I am waiting for Shado to narrate his entrance. if you haven't narrated entering by then Ill just include Ambrus entrance with a vague description as I narrate the NPCs entering.
