IC Session 02 - Raxus Prime

#1

Post by SanguineAngel » Mon Jul 30, 2018 6:35 pm

Fleeing the destruction of the
resistance's base on Ferro, and
under order from his commanding
officer, Ziz Tucanna has made the
three day hyperspace jump to
RAXUS PRIME, the infamous junk
planet.

Hoping to make contact with the
Rebllion's new arms supplier,
DESOSA, the pilot of the WISHBONE
hopes to repair his ship and find the
information he needs to make his
way to the Rebel Alliance's secret
base.

He has shaken the Empire for now
but things are never easy on RAXUS
PRIME as the hot shot rebel pilot is
soon to find out...

After three tortuous days, stuck in the cockpit of the Wishbone with noone for company but Stapes, the pit maintenance droid, you finally enter into the Raxus system. The stars suddenly snap into place and the black backdrop of space returns after 3 days of glaring white/blue hyperspace.

Miraculously, you have dropped out of hyperspace into the Raxus System, as desired! Without an Astrogation computer to perform the calculations, this is no small feat. Raxus Prime is somewhat further away than you'd probably hoped - little more than a vile brown, thumbnail sized disk in the distance. With hundreds of thousands of kilometers between you, it will likely still take the best part of an hour to reach the planet's atmosphere.

Stapes chirrups a warning at you at about the time the ship's hazard detection alarm lights arm with a proximity alert. You radar shows a a huge number of objects in space around you. Those damn calculations have brought you out right in the middle of an asteroid belt!

Take a hard Piloting Check (DDDs) with Setback due to the sudden nature of this alarm to avoid those space rocks!

[Also, please roll for Destiny Points]

Ziz flinches slightly as a very small piece of rock debris bounces off the windscreen. He flicks a couple of switches to his right to help stabilise the Wishbone and check its responsiveness.

These old bolts may have served me well but they do like to fall asleep on those long rides sometimes. he thinks to himself reassuringly of his actions.

Although the ship miraculously made it into a safe area of the belt, Ziz quickly notices a cluster of small to medium sized asteroids approaching. He cricks his neck side to side causing a slight cracking and winds his shoulders back to loosen up before taking a firmer grip on the steer.

Spoiler:

The trail starts quite easy. A medium swerve to the left, back to centre, a swerve to the right. Nothing too daring and easily managed. However, manoeuvres start becoming more regular and the tightness of the available gaps start to take a toll on Ziz. Keeping a steady hand, he feels a bead of sweat roll down his brow as he is determined not to break concentration.

Ziz isn't worried too much about the Wishbone, it's taken hits from harder rocks than this before. What does cause a worry is causing a commotion that may attract unwanted attention in these parts. Ziz thinks he would like to get his ship landed safely before having having to deal with any further scuffles.

But it looks like everything will be ok as there in the final break, is an opening. The exit to the asteroid belt. As the Wishbone drifts silkily through the last remaining space, Ziz starts to exhale out a breath he'd been holding in. And then CRUNCH!

Nearby, two large boulder rocks collide and causing one to smash away at an increased speed. Approaching the Wishbone from a blindspot behind, it knocks into the right thruster and shunts the ship of course slightly. Lights start flashing on the control dashboard as Ziz recovers himself from jumping at the unexpected collision. He pulls the Wishbone back on course just in time to make it through the desired hole. The left side of the ship scraping the surface of the last asteroid on its way out sounding worse than it is.

Spoiler:
OOC: GM to determine Wishbone damage.

"Heh, nothing a lick of paint won't cover up" Ziz chuckles nervously back at Stapes, who is whirring frantically in the back gunner chair.

As the Wishbone breaks into clear space, Ziz casts his eyes on the "trash planet" and surveys the atmosphere for any suspicious ships or craft. The coast looks clear for now (Advantage).

Your shields took a battering under constant bombardment of debris. At somepoint, your deflectors just couldn't cope. Whether it was the big rock from behind, the scrape on exit or just an unlucky hit from a pebble is pretty academic at this point: your readouts show critical damage to your forward deflector. Just another thing that needs repaired.
Spoiler:
GM; Target Lock; Critical Hit collision on the Wishbone:
Numeric Roll: 1D100+-10=23

Until the crit is repaired, your Foreward Defence value is reduced by 1 (to 0).
At least now you've a clear run to Raxus Prime.

Trying to ignore the red flashing messages from the dashboard, Ziz pushes forward into the clear space and plots his path to a known safe place close to the designated docking bay for his ship.

He quietly enjoys the tranquil vastness of space for one last time, sighing greatly at the rusty wreck of a planet in front of him.

The Wishbone swoops towards Raxus Prime. As the atmosphere starts to come in range, Ziz flicks a couple of switches to alter the pressure and stability of the ship.

Raxus Prime does not get any prettier up close. Descending through the atmosphere, you pass through layers of noxious gas clouds. What looked like desert wasteland from space now resolves into an endless see of rubbish. Somewhere below, hidden from sight beneath a superstructure of the galaxy's refuse, thousands of scavengers dedicate their lives to religiously picking through the dross in the hopes of finding a big score or eeking out a meagre existance...

Sector 31.a is indistinguishable. You wouldn't have a hope of locating the area but for the series of nav bouies strung through the planet's airspace. Landmarks are few and far between. Occassionally, you spot a sizeable refuse plant billowing out thick clouds of smoke into the already riuned atmosphere.

The settlement appears suddenly - nearly completely hidden by the mountains of trash. In the blink of an eye, you spot a small network of lights denoting civilisation. From here, it looks like little more than a handful of shacks connected by fairie lights. A relatively flat piece of 'land' a short walk outside the settlement looks a likely candidate for a landing spot.

[OOC: An Easy (Pss) Piloting (Space) check is required to navigate the piles of trash and land safely. (setback for terrain, setback for landing gear)]

The Wishbone comes in as steady as it will allow. Ziz is careful of the uneven terrain with his old ship.

Spoiler:
Ziz; Target Lock; Landing on Raxus Prime:
5 Successes, 1 Threat, 1 Triumph,

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Surprisingly, the landing is softer than it was expected to be due to the numerous landings in this spot previously. The Wishbone eases down and a loud hissing sounds can be heard from several components relieving pressure and exhausting excess heat. The landing gear seems to have held out and a green light on the dash seems to show that the landing in fact popped the gear back into place. Although relieved, Ziz thinks it is probably still best to get this checked.

As he looks around from the cockpit, he sees a magnitude of various parts, spares and fuelling apparatus. If there was ever a chance to get the Wishbone back up to scratch, this was as good as any.

Ziz could hear voices below, one specifically louder than the rest. Someone was calling up.

Through the muffled dampening of his windshield hatch, he could just about make out a few odd words, "alive".. "hero!".. "fix"...

Ziz unbuckled himself and released the cockpit hatch. As the warm, dusty air rushed in to greet him, it was strangely refreshing to breathe something new after all this time. However, the sudden rush of "fresh" oxygen makes Ziz feel slightly dizzy (Threat). Ziz stands himself up and begins his exit of the ship (carefully) to find out who has come to greet him.

OOC: Use Triumph to get repairs on the ship?

"Hoo-o-o-ey! There anyone alive in there?"

Ziz, your feet are unsteady, your head swimming. Without a staircase to descend, you'll be forced to climb over the Wishbone's bulbous fuselage before dropping to the ground. As you clamber out of the cockpit, you spy your visitor, a vaguely humanoid bundle of rags stood beneath you at the very nose of your ship. As you stare down at the figure's head, he, she, or it rubs at the hull about where the registration mark would be. "Now then, what have we here? Tsk. You've sure been through some - hey! That can't be right..." The hull rubbing intensifies. You can see from here that the cloth is now stained black. "This is... is this... The Wishbone?!"

The figure leans back, face fully wrapped and big round goggles staring at you, "What have you done to this ship!?"

More concerned with keeping his balance than identify who has been addressing him, Ziz wobbles slightly as he adjusts to the new climate. Above, a mixture of thick pollution and clouds block the sky but every now and then a beam of sun pours through an odd gap illuminating the settlement now and again.

Ziz rubs his eyes and pats himself down making sure he has what he needs on him.

"Watch the ship Stapes. I'll won't be gone long.. Hopefully." he calls back to the small pit droid who is clambering around the ship attempting to fix odd bits but not really doing much.

As he remembers that someone has been talking this whole time, Ziz looks for a clear spot below and slides down the side of the front head of the Wishbone landing a few feet away from the talkative stranger.

Looking the figure up and down, Ziz responds to the stranger's question.

"Same thing I always do. Show the old girl a good time." Ziz says coolly raising one eyebrow and looking away into the distance.

These kind of lines always worked on the fans and commentators for Ziz. He thinks maybe it will win him some star points with this "fan" too.

The bundle of rags reaches up and raises its goggles up it's head. Two narrowed eyes peer out at you. "Say, now. That's just the sort of thing those flyboys used to say on those press whatsits - junkets. But -" Eyes widen and they start hopping from foot to foot, "Oh wow. No way! You're never him! Are you? Hrm what was that name? Lev Tucana?!"

Ziz was enjoying the build up of being recognised until he heard his brother's name.

"It's Ziz Tucana." he replied.

"Lev was my brother.. He's.. no longer in the business." Ziz continued.

It had been so long since he had heard someone speak his name that it hit him harder than it should have. However, this was quickly followed by a huge sense of gratitude and contentment as he was pleased to know people still remembered his name.

"But I'm sure he'd have been glad to know that he gets mentioned first over me." Ziz smirked.

His demeanour was more relaxed now as the showman stance had turned to more of natural pose. Ziz looked closely at this strange character and asked;

"I'm sorry, and you are?"

"Oh, I'm right sorry to hear that... me? I'm Cora. I guess I'm the welcome committee today." She stand straight, clears her throat and presents her hands, palms up towards you,

"Welcome to Clearlake, jewel of Sector 31.a!"

With one arm, she gestures expansively to take in rolling hills and tottering spires of garbage. Directly behind her, she indicates a small path forged between rubbish mounds. "This here, is the land of opportunity. Say, I don't suppose you're in the market to sell? The thing looks like it's about to fall apart."

As Cora introduces herself and welcomes Ziz to Clearlake, he is grimaces a little at her "sense of pride" for the wreckage that lay around them. Ziz was used to mounds of old ships and spare parts from back home but it was nothing like this.

He snaps back into focus when Cora asks about the Wishbone.

"I'm sorry but she's not for sale. Sentimental value." he says.

"But I sure would appreciate it if you could point me in the direction to where I can get her spruced up and ready to spread her wings again."

"Shame... shame." She says, whistfully. She seems reluctant to part with the vessel, distracted. A few moments later she shakes herself off and returns her attention to you. "Sure, I know just the place! Best mechanic in town!" With which she strides off down the beaten path, beckoning you to follow.

Through your boots, you can feel the lumps, bumbs and awkward protrudences of discarded mechanical parts, electroncs, foodstuffs, packaging. Footing is not quite stable. A piece of rusted metal breaks under foot and the broken piece disappears down a small gap in the rubbish pile you stand on that goes down, who knows how far. The beaten path is actually covered with a thin layer of matting that looks positively inviting.

Bardax raises one eyebrow with a suspicious look as he watches Cora gaze longingly at the Wishbone. Slightly perturbed, he assured himself maybe it had been too long since he had engaged with a fan.

He turned to the ship and made a double clicking noise with his mouth and then made his way out of the landing zone following Cora. Reacting to the clicking noise, Stapes reared his head up slightly from within the ship. He then backed up into a corner where he had the best vantage point of the ship's cockpit and folded himself up as if on stand-by. His big, black glassy eye stayed fixated on front of the ship staying on guard.

The walk after Cora was more of a hop-skip-wobble as Bardax danced around odd bits of scrap to keep his balance. The smell of old oil, rust and mechanical spares felt somewhat nostalgic and gave Bardax a sense of comfort despite the aesthetics and questionable characters passing by.

Seeing some of the best junkers in the universe back home coming and going through the family business, Bardax was curious to see who this "best mechanic in town" could be.

Cora leads you down a path from the "Landing Pad" that meanders around a few small hillocks. The way is lit with festoon lighting; although currently broad daylight, the thick brown smog of Raxus Prime is all pervasive and tints the air, causing the lights to glow pleasantly in the haze.

In short order, you come to edge of Clearlake. The festoon lighting continues down into a wide main street flanked by buildings of varying style and quality. From converted storage containers to the remains of hulked ships. The first building on your right, for instance, appears to be made of miscelanous metal sheeting taken from any number of wrecked vehicles, but with a roof of disused TIE solar panels. A thick cable runs from the roof to a generator at the side of the buildilng. There are, perhaps, two dozen buildings lining the main drag of Clearlake with various side streets branching off to reveal additional buildings further back.

"It's probably not like anything you're used to. We're something of a frontier town all the way out here. Since we're right near the edge of the great waste - there's a lot of competition for the prize scrap out there." She nods up the street before taking a right turn down one of the side streets, "Up that way, you've got yer drinking hole. The money pit's right opposite and you can gamble away your hard earned cred there if you're an idiot... My friend's up this way"
Spoiler:
Cora; Target Lock: Deception check vs Perception

Everything looks kosher to you!
At the end of the alley is a particularly curious looking building, apparently composed of the empty shell of a Star Destroyer's fuel containment system. The large cylindrical tank lies on it's side, cut to lie flat. Pipes, fuel lines and supporting brackets still lace the exterior, whilst the generator housing at one end remains in place and thrums with activity. Doors and windows have been haphazardly cut into the superstructure. Buildings crowd in on both sides down the narrow labe approaching the building.

Walking along, Ziz tried to make out if he recognised anybody. Through the odd bustle of strangers and mixed races, he could not.

Ziz looked up at the rickety "building" and smirked a little. These junkers must be like him, he understands them after all.

He brushes off a little dust that had settled on his jacket and steps forward.

"Shall we then?" he beckons to Cora.

It's impossible to see Cora's face under the rags but she gives you a look that is hard to place. Putting her gloved hands in pockets you didn't realise she had, she whistles an off-key ditty as she strolls slightly behind you, allowing you to lead.

[flipping a DS]

About half way to the building, a large Besalisk steps from the shadows, four arms flexing, knuckles cracking. The rags he wears barely fit him.

"See now, Cora, what have you brought me today? Think this might finally be good enough to clear your debt?"

"Easy Barco, I did what you asked didn't I? You tell Aardo Thugg this one's famous - might be worth more to you alive to you than the ship is."

Cora's tone is apologetic as she reaches up to pull back her hood, "Sorry Ziz. It won't mean much but I really am a big fan. But you know how it goes." A curly mop of dark green hair springs up on top of her head. She unwraps the cloth covering her face. She has dark yellow skin marked with simple blocky tattoos. She is, apparently, a mirialan. She shrugs, "You get nothing for nothing. I'm in a bind myself and for this my slate is clear. Right, Barco?"

Barco grunts, and moves towards you. His voice is deep and gravelly. Like if a boulder could talk. "Famous, eh? It's the ship I'm interested in, Cora, you know that. But maybe he'll be worth something too... Give up the keys to the ship, boy." As he approaches, he spreads his four arms threateningly.

Slightly gobsmacked, Ziz turns to face this great monstrous thug.

"WHOA!! Whoa! Hold it there big guy." Ziz snaps as he jumps back a little gaining a little more range.

"Now, hey come on. We can be smart, sensible grown ups about this, right?" Ziz smiles as he holds his hands up as a sign of submission.

"Look, maybe there's something we can work out here where we're ALL winners. Huh?" he shrugs looking round from Barco to Cora and back again.

"Come on.." Ziz raises one eyebrow and smiles a great big cheesy smile like the ones he used to do for the crowds.

Barco grunts and flexes his four massive arms, before bearing down on you. "You talk too much. I'll be taking the key and you. We'll see what Aardo wants to do with a nuisance prettyboy.". He makes a lunge to grab you.

Barco makes a clumsy grab for you, hoping to distract you with his patter perhaps, but you are too quick and able to dodge back. Barco let's out a grunt of frustration. A quick glance around and you can see Cora is motionless behind you, caught between an apparent desire to stay or to bolt. Barco is in front and still too close for comfort. There are only two obvious ways out of this alley.

OOC: I flip a light side pip
As Ziz steadies himself from his lucky dodge, his right foot comes into contact with something and it makes a loud "CLANG".

He looks down anxiously to see what it was and notices it is a manhole cover for a sewage opening that has been left open. The opening, now just to Ziz's right is normal size with a visible ladder on the inside going down into the darkness. It is far too small for someone of Barco's stature to fit.

Without hesitating a second longer, Ziz reaches behind and grabs Cora's wrist.

"COME ON!"

And with that, he makes lurches towards the hole.
