Play-by-Post Tips

  1. Be patient. PbP games pace much slower than tabletop games. Some players may only be able to post once a day. Be considerate and make allowance for players that cannot post as quickly as others.
  2. IC (In-Character) threads are for the telling of a game's story. The ongoing narrative. Only what a character says and does in response to current events being narrated belongs in an IC thread, and game mechanics (such as dice rolls) that would otherwise break and/or distract from the narrative belong in spoiler blocks. Discussions between players about the game, or between players and the GM go in an OOC thread, as do statements about what a character has done in the past.
  3. Game flow consists of 'narrative' and 'structured' time. Structured time (aka combat rounds) occurs whenever there is combat or a situation that requires measuring the passage of time (such as if you're aboard a ship about to fall into a black hole and you have just a few minutes to save yourselves).
    When in combat you need to describe what your character does during their 'turn' with some narrative, and then in a spoiler block beneath the narrative you should specify the game mechanics involved in your turn. For example:
    Fluke Starwanderer draws his blaster pistol, sights down the barrel, and fires at the approaching Stormtoopers.
    Spoiler:
    Maneuver 1: draw weapon
    Maneuver 2 (strain +2): Aim
    Action: attack, expending a Destiny Point

    {insert roll results here}
  4. You should use Oggdude's Character Generator (download from here) when creating your character. This will greatly help you to avoid making mistakes in XP costs or in the costs and encumbrance of your character's gear.
  5. Take advantage of the PbP format to be deliberative. By that I mean take your time to consider your actions. Both in what your character does and in what you say in narrative. You're not at a gaming table. No one's going to get upset with you for taking 10 minutes, or 10 hours, to think before you speak/act. And please take the time to check your posts for spelling and grammar. If you're not naturally good at English composition, write your stuff up in a word processor so that you can have it do the mundane work for you and then copy/paste into your post. The Internet is forever; do you really want to look like you failed 5th-grade English?
  6. If you post from a phone, your phone's so-called 'auto-correct' is going to drastically screw up what you write. Try to turn that function off, or defer posting IC until you can use a 'real' computer. It's highly annoying to have your phone always change every instance of "turret" into "torrent".
