Raven, you can't see much from this low vantage point. Indeed, besides the sides of this trench or ditch and the building on the precipice above, you can only see the darkness. But all is not as desolate as it seems. You catch a blur of movement in the halflight of your sabers a split second before you hear the sound of someone, or something moving around the corner of the building. Your impression is of something small - 3 feet or so - and upright. Suddenly, you realise you are not alone here.

Bardax spins around to look in the direction where the noise came from but is unable to make anything through the shadows. Lightsaber elevated and poised ready, he slides closer slowly by an inch to try and gain a better visual.

"Raven, did you catch that? What was it?" Bardax whispers across to Raven.

Raven raises his saber in a defensive stance and replies, "I am not sure. It is not big, but that doesn't mean it is not dangerous. We may not be able to rest just yet."

Lowering his saber, Bardax pulls out his electrobinoculars and starts to retrace his steps back out of the ditch for a better vantage point. From the rear of the ditch, Bardax finds a small boulder to step up on to gain a slightly more elevated view. .

He looks through the binoculars in the direction of the sound and scans the mine entrance area flicking between the low light and thermal settings. Bardax waits a few moments to see if any movement occurs or a better indication of any life forms.

While holding his lightsaber up between himself and where he thinks the intruder is, Raven reaches out with the force to try and see how many things are out here:

Raven, reaching out with the force you begin to feel tantalising movements in the fabric of your surroundings, like vribrations on a spider's web, with you at it's heart. You feel an animal rush of excitement. Push a little more, be a little ruthless and you are sure you could count the prey around you. Erm... the lifeforms.

[If you wish to use a dark side pip to sense all the life form within short range, you may do so - taking 1 conflict and 2 strain]

Bardax
, oblivious to Raven's questing with the force, you make your way to higher ground, where you can get a decent view with your electrobinoculars. The first thing that becomes apparent is the vast upper peak of Shadowmount still looming in beyond. Judging your surroundings, you would put yourselves in the saddle of the mountain, between the lesser and greater peaks. This is about where Vidarr Hoss pointed on the initial descent.

Ahead of you, the two storey ruin sits at the edge of a rubble strewn trench, running back down the mountain slope to your right. This looks like the collapsed remains of a large, ancient road that now forms a gully you have followed up the mountain for the last couple of kilometers.

Further in, you see a complex of buildings in verious states of disrepair. There are 4 additional buildings
  • To the rear of the compex, the substantial remains of a warehouse of some sort.
  • Between that and the road is a narrow circular tower, perhaps 4 storeys tall.
  • An impressive looking mansio of some description.
  • Abutting the mansio is a long, single storey building.
Together, the 5 buildings are arrayed in a rough semicircle around a sizeable clearing between them and the continuining moutainside, where a spot indicates the presence of a cave entrance.

As you scan the compound, you spot the occassional movement as something disappears from view, particularly towards the Mansio. However, you cannot get a clear view of any of the lifeforms. They appear to be hiding.

Raven walks toward where the movement was coming from, with his saber held at the ready to illuminate, but also possibly defend himself. "We mean you no harm, but I must insist you show yourself."

Bardax watches closely as Raven makes a move to the unknown presence and commands it to show itself.

Acting swiftly from this, Bardax switches off his saber and makes an agile dash across the ditch and up to the other side. He heads into the shadows of the ruined building and creeps round the right side. Bardax hopes to get a decent flanking position behind the mysterious creature whilst it is distracted by Raven with his ignited training saber.

Raven, you make your way up the bank, dislodging rubble but keeping your footing and head around the building. Out of the darkness, at the ruin's corner, a figure begins to take shape. Slowly, the light of your saber reveals a small rodent-like creature. It is short but stocky, and covered in short fur. Facially, you might be inclined to see something almost cute but for suspicious, beady eyes reflecting the blue light of your weapon and the creature's small mouth pulled back in a grimace of tiny, sharp teeth. It holds a primitive spear with two hands, pointed at you. Though only two thirds your size, this small furry creature none the less stands firm in the face of fear and uncertainty. Crouched, ready for trouble.

Bardax, your aim is to sneak up on the creature. You have the benefit of darkness, of the cover of the ruin and of a significant distraction but the creature is alert and the dark can hinder as much as help. You must roll an Average (PPssbbb) Stealth check to sneak up unnoticed.

Spoiler:

As he creeps round the back side of the ruined building, Bardax starts to close in on the creature, which is now illuminated by Raven's saber glow. Just as he reaches for his training saber in preparation, the small rock that his right foot is perched on, gives way and rolls causing Bardax to stumble clumsily in an attempt to steady himself. The result is far from steady and tripping over his own feet, Bardax stumbles about a few steps causing a ruckus among the smaller debris and stones.

"Damn it!" he snarls as he watches the now very startled creature spin around to see the commotion.

In the creature's hindered movement however, Bardax notices that it seemed to be missing it's left foot as it's little stump is quite prominent on the stones in front of him (Advantage). Perhaps from an accident in these old mines or a scuffle with another rodent creature.

The creature reacts angrily and for the first time speaks, a string of harsh sylables and gutteral sounds. It is about as far from galactic common as possible. As it berates you in an alien language, it waves the spear, which you can see is made of scrap metal, and moves to keep you both in front. Despite a stump for a foot and a severe limp, it moves with surety.

The creature goes quiet, glances over its shoulder in the direction of the other buildings (though they are hidden in the darkness) and settles back, waiting.

Bardax senses the creatures hostility and feeling the situation starting to get heated decides to try and calm things down.

Spoiler:
Bardax; Dark Academy; Influence Check on Rodent Creature:
1 Failure, 1 Advantage, 2 Light Side

OOC: Use the 2 pips to stress the creature's mind.

He focuses his mind to connect with the small rodent creature's to deliver a calming state. Unfortunately, the creature's determination proves too strong this time and Bardax feels he is unable to penetrate it's mind. Although unaware of Bardax's attempt, the creature suddenly seemed slightly confused about what just happened and momentarily looks vacant, staring coldly into the night (Advantage).

The creature stumbles backwards, careful to keep the spear pointed towards you but visibly shaken and his guard is lowered a little. You both sense that he is uncertain and that now is a time to act [you receive a boost to your next social or combat check with this individual).

Raven, you peer into the creature's mind and you see there an image of yourself writ large. In his mind's eye, you are a towering titan, stepping forth from the night and wielding a sword of wild flame. He is awestruck, but afraid and nervous.

Stranger! Threat? Saviour? You sense a powerful desire to proctect... someone. But more, he is not just afraid of your weapon but there is a pragmatic anger towards the light. Stupid!

Raven turns off his Saber, and also signals for Bardax to leave his on but stay back. Then waits to see if that pacifies the creature.

As the saber's blade is extinquished, you see the tension in the creature dissipate a little. shoulders become looser, the stance less rigid.

Still, the creature is not entirely pacified and keeps his weapon up. It says something again in an alien language, louder this time. He pokes the spear at you both as you speak

As Bardax notices the creature start to relax slightly, he holds up his hands with his saber turned off, lowers himself down on one knee to the creatures height and attempts to reach out to it's mind once again.

Spoiler:
Bardax; Dark Academy; Influence Check on Rodent Creature:
0 Success, 2 Threats, 1 Dark Side

ImageImageImageImageImage

OOC: I will choose not to inflict any further strain on this attempt.

Once again, Bardax's effort is blocked by the creature's strong will.

What the..? Am I losing it? he thinks to himself.

The creature is suddenly back on high alert as it seemed to be more aware Bardax was trying some kind of trickery this time. It is apparent the creature will not be subjective to such magic. An angry grumbling can be heard not too far away where the other creatures are hiding but watching carefully.

"Well, I've given it my bets shot. You got any other plans Raven?" he says as he glances up at his comrade, still on one knee and hands placed out in front of him.

Raven replies, "Yes brother, I have several, none of them ideal. We could leave, and hope he stays here to protect his allies, or we can eliminate him, and hope we don't have to deal with a swarm of vengeful vermin later.

Raven, trying to pantomime as best he can and hoping the creature follows along, points to Bardax and himself, then to the warehouse, and takes a step in that direction. Then, looking as menacing as possible, and standing up to his full height, he points to the creature, snaps on his saber, and motions for the creature to go back toward whatever he is protecting.
Spoiler:
Raven; Dark Academy; Coercion of critter:
0 Success, 1 Threat

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Sadly, that went better than I expected.
Then without looking to see the effect this threat has on the creature, he turns toward the warehouse and starts walking.

The creature is initially nonplussed but you've a flash of amusement from him as you make a show of your menace and threat."Chibbidi" he says, in apparent realisation or confirmation.

It is not obvious exactly how the creature has interpreted your communication but he does not abandon you as you had hoped. Instead, he does visibly relax his guard and follows you at a short distance while you cross the compound towards the warehouse.

Crossing the yard, the ground is far more even, though occassionally, you can feel regular, shallow grooves under foot. As you cross the centre of the yard, the creature again speaks up in its odd chirruping language. Naturally, you do not understand a word of what he says but he gestures left, towars the mouth of the cave and what he says is clearly of some importance to him. He does not stop walking as he talks.

[OOC: The creature no longer appears to hold you in awe and seems far more at ease in your company. (1 Threat)]

Bardax watched curiously as Raven attempted some form of communication and went on his way. He followed Raven cautiously but gradually began walking with more gusto once they got going. Bardax glanced back at the creature every now and and then as it followed making its unusual noises.

As the creature makes an obvious point that they should go left towards a cave opening, Bardax slows his pace until they are at the entrance.

He pulls out his electrobinoculars and glances into the dark cave...
Nothing appears out of the ordinary however the creature seems quite eager to go inside. It is quickly joined by a number of other creatures who have now emerged from the shadows (Advantage).

[Nice!]

The grooves in the floor, with your binoculars have the pattern of an old track system all over this courtyard, to the warehouse and the apparent entrance from where you have come. All converge on the cave entrance. The cave, now that you are closer, looks completely natural but inside, there is nothing - it is simply a black hole. There is not enough light or heat to make out any details inside.

Bardax, you spot them first with your electrobinoculars - dozens of creatures like the one you have with you, approaching from the mansion you saw earlier, on your right. Slowly, tentatively, they emerge from the night, dimly lit by starlight. Your 'companion' breaks a hushed silence, beginning a chirped exchange with the others, who respond quietly but with more and more joining in as the become emboldened. While your 'companion' gestures from yourselves to the cave, some seem to agree whilst others in the group seem to become agitated and gesture in the opposite direction. It seems that opinion about.... something, is divided. The exchange is brief. And possibly confusing.

One creature steps forward to address you both. As it does so, you see it wears some sort of head dress. "Chub. chibbidy chuchub." It points slowly toward first the mansion, then the cave and stares at you, awaiting some sort of response.

As activity picks up around them, Bardax feels no threat from the small creatures bustling around. In fact, he starts to think that this could advantageous for them.

"Well, it seems we have a choice between the cave and the mansion." he says as he nods in that direction.

"It would be unwise to split up while we are outnumbered and have no idea what lies in there. Fancy some spelunking?"

Bardax starts to make his way over to the cave, saber held low to help ignite the floor to the entrance of the cave.

You sense a bubbling of emotions around you but the chieftain at the front of the crowd has both the strongest presence and also the most guarded. You cannot see into her mind but the emotions run off her like water. A mix of excitement towards you, and to your one-footed companion, annoyance and pity in equal measure. Although not aimed at you, the pity is particularly intrusive and infuriating.

Still, you do not need your powers to see that she is held in high regard by those around her. Most have stopped to attend to her chirruping words. She gestures to the cave and behind her to the mansion somewhere in the darkness. It is clear she wishes you all to return to that building. Though you cannot understand her words, and though you hold an anger towards her, you sense from her a calmness and a caution. She speaks to one-foot behind you but is it enough to temper your own emotion?
