Harvest Festival: Final Preperations

#1

Post by swrider » Sun Oct 28, 2018 5:10 pm

A week passes after you get back from the grave yard. The mysterious darkness had dissipated by the time you exited with the cauldron and book. The few zombies still in the area have been hunted down by the locals soldiers and destroyed. Cleric Bersk and Lord Larimore have secured the cauldron in the catacombs beneath the new temple. The book was collected by Gage while Shor-tay and a few others were unconscious and any knowledge of it remains with Gage.

The city is becoming even more busy if one could believe it. More farmers and villargers migrate their way in followed by wagon after wagon of produce, grain, and livestock. The city is bursting at the seems and the harvest festival is nearly upon them. With a new stash of loot in your pockets and the acceptance of the city guards thanks to your recent help, you are welcomed in the city. Most of the week passes without incident, you see little of each other besides at the inn where most of you are staying. Shor-tay keeps busy during the day, but has continued his nightly dinners at the inn. Each time you sit with him he offers you a pint, his generosity keeping the bar wench acutely aware of his tables needs. As the seventh day passes, Shor-tay sends word to each of you to meet him at his table. Cleric Bersk, who is otherwise detained with preparations sends a newly arrived paladin in his stead.

As you enter the inn, shor-tay sits at his normal seat. Several flagons of ale and a pile of food already laid out before him. The tiny paladin sits on a high chair raising him up to the level of the table. Few say anything to him, his prestige already well established in town. A few patrons send their thanks to Lord Larimore through Shor-tay, for his help with the temple. Everyone is excited for the dedication, and the prosperity the temple will bring to the city. Talk of a formal dedication and ball consume all the local gossip and you are questioned numerous times about wither you will be attending.

Deciding that his armor was unnecessary Rurik changed into his fine clothes. Heading into the inn's dining area he was easily able to locate Shor-tay. "Sir Shor-tay, I am Rurik Ironfist. It is both a privilege and an honor Sir. I have heard about your recent exploits in the Necropolis and I look forward to working with the group in the future."

Meddaar arrived shortly after Rurik. He bowed his head to the two paladins before taking a seat at the table. "This is quite the spread Sir Shor-tay. You aren't trying to butter us up for a favor are you?" He said the last bit with a toothy grin. The tone in his voice was clearly meant to be taken as a joke.

"Wench, butter for my friend! Shor-tay calls to the waitress who nods in response. "I am just enjoying the comforts of civilization while I can. Please enjoy." Turing to the new comer he asks. "Who told you about that endeavor or invited you to this party, if I may ask?"

"My humblest apologies. Cleric Bersk is currently busy with preparations for the ceremony and asked if I would come in his stead. I am a Paladin traveling through the kingdom hoping to help those that I can. As for the tale of curing this land of that blight originating from the Necropolis, word travels quickly. I wanted to hear the tale from its source." Rurik bowed his head to Sir Shor-tay. Clearly he felt foolish for assuming that the last minute change had been passed on before his arrival.

"Ahh Cleric Bersk. Sit eat, while we wait. As for how we did it. There was a lot of lightning then blackness, and I woke up at the medic station."

Rurik turned to ask the dragonborn what had happened but Meddaar raised his hand to stop him. Meddaar shivered at the memory. "My experience was the same as Sir Shor-tay's I'm afraid. I'm Meddaar, sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier. The others should be along shortly. They will have the answers you seek."

A few minutes pass before the waitress returns. She carries with her a plate with some butter and bread and places it before Meddaar. "Is there anything else I can get for you m'lords?"

Thew'Ruk enters the room, looking for the Halfling Paladin Shor'Tay who summoned him to their usual eating spot. The others in the part had not seen him much since their travels into the artificial night and in an effort not to startle them he had thrown on a cotton shirt to cover the new tattoos of the spirit warrior that now adorned his chest.

"Hellow friends," Thew'Ruk paused for a moment looking at the new comer before adding, "and stranger. Shor'Tay, It is good to see you again, and especially good to be dining with you as well. Are the others still on their way?"

<Before Thew'ruk's Arrival>

Rurik took a seat at the table and ordered a Dragon Ale. Meddaar ordered the same.

<After Thew'ruk's Arrival>

Meddaar waved to Thew'ruk. "Good to see you Thew'ruk. I trust your down time was well?"

Rurik stood from his chair and looked up at Thew'ruk who towered over him. "I am Rurik Ironfist, a Paladin who follows the teachings of Heironeous. I was asked to come in Cleric Bersk's stead as he is busy with the final preparations for the festival. I was asking your fellows about the journey to the Necropolis, but sadly they can not tell me much. From what I've heard on my travels it was quite the adventure."

Thew'Ruk nodded to Meddaar while taking one of the flagons of ale he assumed Shor'Tay had ordered for the members of the group, "It was a good week for me my friend, a very illuminating week. Speaking of which, did you find those herbs I left for you?"

Turning to the new face in the group, "Ahh, I was wondering when you would speak up, a Paladin is it? Could always use a few more people with the healing touch, In our last fight both Shor'Tay and Bersk were taken down by the first attack and I almost suffered the same fate. If it weren't for this Orc blood of mine we might have all perished in that battle."

He took a drink from his flagon, "Rurik eh?" He repeated the name slowly, testing how he liked the feeling of the word in his mouth, "Ruuuriiiik, I like it, sounds a bit like Ruk. You'll fit in with us."

"Ah yes I did. Thank you for that. I was able to produce one from the herbs we gathered before. It would be nice if I could maintain a garden for the herbs. Meddaar sighed thinking about what that would require to accomplish. "Perhaps someday."

Rurik climbed back in his chair. "I look forward to a grand adventure with you."

"Good to have you, Rurik." says a young man from the side. Gage keeps a distance and then stares off as if something is on his mind.

It appears everyone has arrived. Lord Larimore has another job for us. Nothing quite so glamorous as fighting off the darkness or recovering our fallen heroes, but it pays and is important. Lord Larmiore has commissioned the construction of teleportation circle for the temple. This circle will be a huge boon to the local economy and make the city a major stop for commerce, especially amongst the wealthy. It is being constructed at the capital and he requires us to escort the payment and then the circle back to the city. He also requests that we take a letter to the Lady Sol, the head of the order of light requesting a sacred artifact for the dedication of the temple. We are to retrieve both items and return them here to the city.

The capital is north east of the city, on the far side of the Forrest.

Meddaar strokes his chin before answering. "It would be rude to decline. I will gladly assist."

"I will help as well. It will be a great honor to assist this city in its growth. When will we be leaving?" Rurik finishes his ale in a single gulp clearly ready to begin whenever they are ready.

Oomaq walks up to the table as Sir Shor-tay finishes off his description of the upcoming trip. Using his tail to snag a mug of ale from the passive server. "Sounds like another trip for our intrepid group." he says looking over the group. Extending a hand to the new dwarf with the party. "Greetings, I'm Oomaq, resident light-finger, and despite what Sir Shor-tay says we're not all here yet."

Rurik grasps Oomaq's hand with a hearty chuckle. "This is definitely a varied group! All that's missing is a minstrel to sing a ballad as we travel."

Meddaar sat his now empty mug on the table Oomaq a grin. "Perhaps I'll have a chance to play on our trip. I have a wagon with supplies already loaded. We can leave whenever we are ready. I have enough feed and even some emergency rations as well. When would Lord Larimore like us to leave?"

"We need to be back the day before the harvest festival. There are two methods to reach the capital. We can travel over the mountain pass and through the great forest or we can take the road around. Going around is a longer path and will take at least an extra day. Over the mountains will take two.
Spoiler:
The festival is in 8 days. You need to be back in seven.

Rurik stroked his beard in thought. "Is there any difference in the two paths besides the time it will take? What are the possible dangers on each route?"

"The mountain is treacherous, the top of the pass goes through a narrow canyon just below the snow covered peaks. Caution must be taken this time of the year. The mountains receive near constant snow, but a warm swing can loosen it can cause an avalanche. The locals warn of ferocious beasts, and strange beings who live in the mountains. The forest, is believed to be haunted. Some have heard strange noises and many more have gotten lost in its vast expanse. Most of that, though, I believe is just superstition. The road around is longer and can be frequented by bandits. Its length makes it difficult to protect, by kingdom guards, whom often stay close to the cities.

"Speed is the best course of action, in my humble opinion. We should do our best to ensure that the festival is not delayed. We should follow the mountain pass. That way we will have the extra days if trouble does find us." Meddaar said in regards to the debate of their route.

Rurik had a different opinion on the matter though. "As much as I miss my mountain home I think it would be best to take the longer route. Bandits plague that path and cause all manner of trouble for the citizens of this region. Certainly if we could deal with some of these troublemakers on our journey it would make the path safer for others to travel. I understand that it would only give us a single day of leeway, but I feel it would benefit the people that call this area home."

"You speak of over the mountains and through the woods, but is there any actual path that way? As much as I am a fan of the forest, trying to maneuver a donkey and wagon through without a path is not advisable. Especially if speed is required."
Oomaq transfers the mug from tail to had, using the tail to dig into his jewelers kit pulling out a lock. "Here Meddar, I know you are the trusting sort, but I figured this will work on your chest."
