Noticeable Features And Characteristics: Vo wears the mark of Ihcari and bears the surname of Cari just as all who bear the mark do. His personality is rather fatalistic, seeing an inevitable end for himself. He knows that despite what the hopeful say, those who bear the mark are never meant to find redemption, and as a result, he doesn't have the will to hope when he's sober.

Background:

All peoples have their folktales; foibles meant to pass on their history and instill in their children a sense of morality that would allow them to be a part of society. Amongst the Mirialan, who prize one's accomplishments above all else, the most important of these folktales is the story of Ihcari Tor, a semi-mythical figure who lived during the time just before the Mirialan discovered hyperdrive. The story follows that Ihcari was a brilliant inventor, brighter than anyone else in his generation, but he was also hasty and imprudent. There were many inventors at the time who wanted to beak the hyperdrive barrier and take the Mirialan further than they had ever dreamed of going, and in that way cementing their position amongst their people's history forever, and it was considered the smart opinion to believe that Ihcari would be the one to do it.

That didn't change when a lead rival in the effort announced that they had made a major breakthrough which would allow them to make a jump test within the month. People talked, most not taking it seriously and assuming it was just the words of an overzealous braggart, but Ihcari took his rivals words very seriously. He began to cut corners, take shortcuts, and the work he should have finished in a cycle was cut down to a few weeks, all in an effort to be the first. When he made his jump it caused a spectacular light show as the explosion sent a trail of light across the sky that lasted for months. He had broken the barrier but died in the process, and half a cycle later the rival who had made the announcement before was able to use Ihcari's notes to break the barrier safely, and his name was lost in obscurity while Ihcari's was immortalized not for his accomplishments but for his pure foolishness and lack of prudence.

All children of the Mirialan grow up knowing about the failure of Ihcari. They're told that when one seeks to gain status through their accomplishments that they should do so wisely and with a measure of prudence, and the mark of the Ihcari has been the signs of all those who have come close to greatness only to burn up too soon due to their own foolishness or rash behavior. Some see the mark as an obstacle to overcome, looking forward to the day when they will redeem themselves by earning marks of redemption, but others realize that the task is too monumental of one to recover from and abandon hope. Vo Cari would count himself amongst the latter group for some time.

Vo Rashiel was a skilled young man with a promising future and the ability to fly circles around anyone who set out to best him. There was always a great deal of talk in his family about how he would put that skill to use and what tattoos he would gain in the process, but he had already had his eyes set on using his flying abilities to help others from a very early age, so despite his family's wishes he became a blockade runner. He quickly showed how good he could be at his job, and people everywhere began to take notice, buying him drinks in taverns he would frequent, calling him the piloting ace who was spitting in the eye of the empire when he brought supplies to the peoples they tried to besiege. Over time the praise would get out of hand, going to his head and being overheard by some who would go on to inform the Empire. Vo became something of a braggart, accepting larger smuggling operations by taking money from loan sharks and then making a public display of what his plans were, boasting that it didn't matter who overheard because no one could stop him anyway. It did matter, however, and he was stopped.

The wrong people overheard him one too many times and on his last mission to take supplies to the people of Rodia after they had been blockaded by the Empire, he was intercepted. His ship and the supplies that were meant for people in a remote region of the planet afflicted by a protracted drought were confiscated. The people had given the last of their money to Vo to purchase the supplies and without his aid, most of them succame to starvation. Vo had no way of knowing this at the time however because he spent the next few years in a prison camp, forced to do hard labor as punishment for the crimes of opposing the Empire. It was not long after he had arrived that a Mirialan woman with dark clothes and piercing yellow eyes came to him, informed him about the costs of his foolishness, and tattoed the Mark of Ihcari across his face. Several times this woman would return to remind him of his failures, and the shame they brought to his people, but also sometimes just to talk. Vo was not much for conversation, but mostly she used him as someone to talk at rather than to talk to, to vent frustrations without ever having to worry about him betraying what she said.

Then suddenly she stopped coming and was gone for many months until eventually, a guard came to his cell and told him that he had been pardoned before giving him a small wooden box with alabaster ornamentation that looked like it could be home. He checked Vo out of the prison and shoved him out the front gate, and only then did he check the contents of the box. It contained only three items, new credentials that listed his name as being Vo Cari, a deposit receipt for the Banking Clan, and a note. The note simply read, "This is the price of your failure, remember that." When he checked on the status of the account Vo found that it had been set up in his name by the Mirialan woman who had visited him, and it contained the liquidated assets from his ship and the shipment of supplies he was supposed to take to the people on Rodia with a note that it should be put to good use. Immediately he began to feel overwhelmed with shame as if the events had just happened all over again. How was he supposed to do anything worthwhile with his history, what could he do to redeem his actions?

Vo Rushiel, now Vo Cari decided that his best course of action was to disappear into a bottle and never leave it again, but it wouldn't be as easy as all that. The debt collectors soon came calling, the loan shark he had done business with in the past having heard he was released and not be easily fooled by his fake credentials. Vo knew that he could be rid of him if he just turned over the bank slip, but the thought of it was more than he could bear. He couldn't bring himself to use the credits, but the thought of giving them away to save himself was even worse. He went from one form of imprisonment to another, having to slowly pay off his debt to the man, taking employ with a cruise liner the loan shark had arrangements with, and taking a position in the ships security offices, his criminal record providing a sense of intimidation and therefore legitimacy to his capacity as a "peace" officer. It was drudging work, but not worse than Vo felt he deserved, and it let him crawl so far into that bottle that he didn't even have to think of his past sometimes. It wasn't all bad though, he made friends with some of the crew, one in particular by the name of Buimo who worked as a navigator for the ship, and he also got to do some good here and there, like the time he found out about a stowaway Jawa after seeing him make some repairs, that the ship's mechanic later took credit for, and then not reporting him, But there were worse days too. The day this all started felt like one of those worse days; when the stowaway he pretended he didn't see got caught and thrown in the brig, and all he could think of was that he used to be a person that helped others in these situations, but now he was nothing.

That night he was getting drunk with Buimo and another fellow from the ship named Sol and he was talking about how frustrated he was about not being able to do anything when everything seemed to black out and next thing he knew he was in a ship with Buimo and the stowaway and he was being told that they had bought it together.

Obligation: Debt: Being a smuggler offers little security, but acquiring a ship and keeping it functioning costs a lot of credits.(10) Obligation: Oath: The character has sworn some sort of oath that dictates his thoughts and actions, shaping his moral view of the world. This could be an oath to a deity, a way of living (such as the Jedi Code), or a willingness to sacrifice for the betterment of some group or cause. Whatever the case, the Oath should be both serious and make life difficult in some ways for the character. It is a personal and deep undertaking, possibly without a truly obtainable end goal in sight. Characters who do not live up to this oath face an internal and moral struggle.(5) Addiction: The character has a strong addiction he must keep feeding. Whether it’s a physical addiction to stims, dust, or alcohol, or a mental addiction such as gambling, law-breaking, or priceless antiques, the character devotes a lot of time, energy, and resources to pursuing or obtaining the object of his addiction. Avoiding this Obligation has an almost immediate result—withdrawal. The exact nature depends on the addiction, but the character finds it increasingly difficult to concentrate on even mundane tasks, often reflected in the GM adding anywhere from ∫ to ∫ ∫ ∫ in skill checks. (5)Motivation:
Vo wasn't just working on the cruise liner for no reason, he wanted to crawl into a bottle and he could have done it anywhere, but he had a significant debt that he owed to a particular loanshark who had financed his exploits in the past, money paid in exchange for occasionally using his skills for less than altruistic means. he had still been in the red with him when he was captured, and he could he could have paid it off with the receipt from the Seventh Sister, but he was wont to give it up, so instead, he paid his debt through working for the cruise line.
And so, when the group decided that they needed money in order to buy this new ship they had their eyes on, in his drunken stupor Vo knew exactly who he could turn to. At first the loan shark was reticent to trust them with such a large sum, but when Vo put up the receipt as collateral that quickly changed.
Vo has been forced to face his past by the recent encounter with his new crewmates and he is disgusted by the man he has become, but why were things happening like this for someone like him, surely he was irredeemable and fate should have just left him to rot on that ship, but it didn't, and Vo started to wonder why. He thought of the stories of his childhood, and of the guiding hand of fate and its instrument the force that had been so prevalent in his household and started to think that maybe this was fate pushing him in a different direction. It was then that he swore to himself that he would become a better man, and redeem himself for the wrongs he had committed in his foolishness. He vowed to try only to ever increase the good in the world. He still hates himself, but he honestly can't let that get in the way of what he needs to do.He is an alcoholic, it is bad.Vo has avoided his past for as long as he feasibly could, not wanting to deal with the seemingly insurmountable task of making amends for his actions, but now things are in motion that wont let him just be Vo the drunkard any more, and he has to find a way to fix his life, he needs to become better, to do better, and to make up for his past, even if the only one who will know about it is himself. For now that means racing, becasue that is the path fate has placed him on, and it is only through racing that he can recover the bank slip he fronted as colatoral for the groups shared loan.
